Brother TN660 toner replacement: I bought the wrong cartridge for my HL-L2365DW

The Brother TN660 I ordered didn't fit my HL-L2365DW. I forced it to work, and the printer even printed duplex, but Brother doesn't list that pairing, so don't copy me.

Tested context

Replaced the toner in my years-old Brother HL-L2365DW laser printer on camera. Compared the Brother TN660 I ordered against the old cartridge, asked ChatGPT and Gemini what to do, then modified the new cartridge and ran a successful duplex test print.

Verdict

The TN660 did not fit my HL-L2365DW: the pin positions and a round part differ from the old cartridge. Brother does not list the TN660 for this printer. I forced it to work by breaking two pins and moving a round part over from the old cartridge, and it printed fine, but I was about 70% sure it wouldn't work, and I don't recommend it. Check your exact model on Brother's site and return a cartridge that doesn't match.

Pros

  • A higher-capacity cartridge, bought from Brother's store on Amazon
  • Worked after modification: printer said Ready and a duplex test print came out

Cons

  • Not listed by Brother for the HL-L2365DW, and it did not fit as-is
  • Making it fit meant breaking pins and swapping a part, which I don't recommend

I ordered a Brother TN660 toner for my old HL-L2365DW and it didn't fit. I ended up making it work, and a duplex test print came out, but Brother doesn't list the TN660 for this printer, so please don't take this as a how-to.

Pulling out the old toner

The printer is an HL-L2365DW, a laser printer I've had for years. When the toner ran out I wanted a genuine, higher-capacity replacement, so I ordered the higher-capacity one from Brother's store on Amazon, which I figured would be genuine. It turned out to be a TN660. Before any of that, I pulled the old cartridge out of its drum unit,.

The TN660 doesn't match

Held next to the old cartridge, the new one was different: the pins sit in different positions, and there's a round part that doesn't line up. Brother's own TN660 page doesn't list the HL-L2365DW, and that matches what I saw. The TN660 is simply not listed for this printer.

What ChatGPT and Gemini said

I pointed my phone at the cartridge and asked an AI assistant what to do.

I pointed my phone at the cartridge and asked ChatGPT and Gemini. Both chatbots said it's incompatible, and the advice they gave was to exchange it for a TN-2305 or TN-2355.

Trying it anyway

I didn't listen. I broke two pins, moved the round black part over from the old cartridge, and screwed everything back together. There was still a gap after the first pass, so it wasn't a clean fit.

Printer says Ready

The Brother printer's LCD reading Ready, next to the Back, OK and Go buttons
After the swap, the display finally said Ready.

It worked. The printer finished its startup and said Ready, and the duplex test print came out. I was about 70% sure it wouldn't work, and I'd call that luck, not a fix. Breaking pins on a cartridge can go wrong in ways that cost more than the exchange would have.

Who should buy the TN660

Only people whose exact printer is on Brother's list for it. If yours isn't, check the model number on Brother's site and return the cartridge. For the HL-L2365DW, ChatGPT and Gemini pointed to the TN-2305 and TN-2355.

The TN-2365 link below is India-market toner for the HL-L23xx series. Check your exact model before buying it too, since I couldn't confirm it for the HL-L2365DW either.

Who it’s for

Buy the TN660 only if your exact printer model is on Brother's compatibility list for it. Check the model number on the printer itself, not just the series name.

Who should skip it

Skip the TN660 if you have an HL-L2365DW. ChatGPT and Gemini both said to exchange it for the TN-2305 or TN-2355 instead.
